(Part 1 of 2)

The city of Antlers, Oklahoma bills itself "The Deer Capital Of The World". By the city's name alone, one can guess a lot of bucks are roaming around in the wilderness of Oklahoma. But hundreds of millions of lost bucks are also in the State's Treasury Dept. and, you guessed right – they are not furry and brown and their not running around. I am obviously talking about the 260 million dollars in Oklahoma unclaimed money stored away in the State Treasurer's Office. These assets are owed to roughly 350,000 Oklahoman's who have somehow lost track of them over the years. The primary reason the state's fund got so large is because most of the owners don't even know they have assets being held by the state!

I didn't know I had it. says Leiland Osmond, after being reunited with $150 of his missing money in an Oklahoma unclaimed money outreach program at the State Fair. Oklahoma State Treasurer Scott Meacham says he's not alone. "Obviously, a lot of people have lost money and don't realize it." the Treasurer noted in a recent report by Oklahoma's KSBI-TV. Visiting the fair paid off for Osmond who hopes to share his newly found cash. "My grandchildren will take care of it."

An extra $150 is enough to make anyone's day, but in another report by NewsOK, a resident of the city of Norman, Oklahoma came away with a lot more than that . The lucky missing cash owner was reunited with $30,000 from some lost AT&T stocks he had forgotten all about. According to Tim Allen, a spokesperson for the State Treasurer's office, the stocks were sold by the State and the cash was placed in the state's Unclaimed Property Fund until the citizen discovered and claimed them.

An extra $150 is enough to make anyone's day, but in another report by NewsOK, a resident of the city of Norman, OK made off with quite a bit more than that . The lucky lost asset owner was reunited with $30,000 from some lost AT&T stock shares he had forgotten all about. According to Tim Allen, spokesman for the State Treasurer's office, the stocks were sold by the State and the proceeds were placed in the state's Unclaimed Property Fund until the citizen discovered and claimed them.

Unclaimed monies are intangible financial assets (aside from safe deposit box contents) that have been classified 'abandoned' by their owners. State law requires these assets to be turned over to the state after a period of dormancy. According to the OK Dept. of Treasury web site, "Evidence of this inactivity includes failure to cash a check, the return of a check or correspondence by the Post Office as undeliverable, or the absence of any communication from the owner."

According to the General Provisions of OK's Unclaimed Property Rules, qualifying 'intangible property' can come from the following sources: (A) drafts, dividends, income interests, checks, monies, and deposits; (B) refunds, unused airline tickets, unidentified remittances, unpaid wages, customer overpayments, credit balances, security deposits, gift certificates, and credit memos; (C) ownership interests in businesses such as stocks; (D) monies deposited to redeem stocks, bonds, coupons and other securities, or to make distributions; (E) amounts due and payable under the terms of insurance policies; (F) amounts due and payable under the terms of mining or mineral leases; and (G) distributable amounts from custodial or trust funds established under a plan to provide health, welfare, pension, vacation, severance, retirement, death, stock purchase, profit sharing, employee savings, supplemental unemployment insurance, or similar benefits.

People lost a handle on these assets after they relocate and do not remember to leave behind a forwarding address which results in lost and uncashed checks and the like. Death is also a common cause of financial assets being abandoned especially if there's no will and the next of kin cannot be located. Most of the time, unclaimed funds owners simply forget about their finances in the busy lives they live.

Residents of OK and other states should check and do an online unclaimed funds search. They might just find out the government owes them money this time rather than the other way around.

The city of Antlers, OK bills itself "The Deer Capital Of The World". By the city's name alone, we can surmize that a number of bucks are prancing around in the wilderness of OK. Hundreds of millions of lost bucks are also in the State's Treasury Department and, you guessed right – they're not furry and brown and their not running around. I'm obviously talking about the 260 million dollars in Oklahoma unclaimed money sitting around in the State Treasury Office. These assets are owed to roughly 350 thousand residents who have somehow lost track of them at some point. The main reason the state's treasure chest got so massive is because the majority of the owners do not even know they have cash being held by the state!

I didn't know I had it. says Leiland Osmond, after being reunited with $150 of his forgotten funds in an OK unclaimed money outreach program at the State Fair. OK State Treasurer Scott Meacham says he is not the only one. "Obviously, a lot of people have lost money and don't realize it." says the Treasurer in a recent report by OK's KSBI-TV. Going to the fair was well worth it for Osmond who hopes to share his newly found cash. "My grandchildren will take care of it."

An extra $150 is enough to brighten anyone's day, but in another report by NewsOK, a resident of Norman, OK came away with a lot more than that . The lucky lost asset owner was reunited with $30,000 from some lost AT&T stocks he had forgotten about. According to Tim Allen, spokesman for the State Treasury office, the stocks were sold by the State and the cash was put in the state's Unclaimed Money Fund until the citizen found and claimed them.

Unclaimed properties are intangible financial assets (aside from safe deposit box contents) that have been classified 'abandoned' by the owners. State law requires these funds to be turned over to the state after a specified period of dormancy. According to the OK Department of Treasury web site, "Evidence of this inactivity includes failure to cash a check, the return of a check or correspondence by the Post Office as undeliverable, or the absence of any communication from the owner."

Unclaimed properties are intangible financial assets (aside from safe deposit box contents) that have been classified 'abandoned' by their owners. State law requires these funds to be turned over to the state after a certain period of inactivity. According to the Oklahoma Dept. of Treasury web site, "Evidence of this inactivity includes failure to cash a check, the return of a check or correspondence by the Post Office as undeliverable, or the absence of any communication from the owner."

According to the General Provisions of Oklahoma's Unclaimed Funds Rules, qualifying 'intangible property' comes in the following forms: (A) drafts, dividends, income interests, checks, monies, and deposits; (B) refunds, unused airline tickets, unidentified remittances, unpaid wages, customer overpayments, credit balances, security deposits, gift certificates, and credit memos; (C) stocks and other intangible ownership interests in business associations; (D) money deposited to redeem bonds, stocks, other securities, coupons, for distribution; (E) amounts payable and due under the terms of insurance policies; (F) amounts payable and due under the terms of mining or mineral leases; and (G) amounts distributable from custodial or trust funds created with a plan to provide profit sharing, stock purchase, supplemental unemployment insurance, employee savings, welfare, health, pension, severance, vacation, death, retirement, among other benefits.

People lost a handle on these assets after they relocate and forget to leave behind a forwarding address which results in lost and uncashed checks and the like. Death is also a common cause of financial assets being lost especially if there's no will and the next of kin can't be found. The majority of the time, unclaimed funds owners just plain forget about their finances in the busy lives they live.

Residents of Oklahoma and other states should check and do an internet unclaimed funds search. They may just discover that the government owes them cash this time rather than the other way around.

An extra $150 is enough to brighten anyone's day, but in another report by NewsOK, a resident of the city of Norman, Oklahoma came away with a lot more than that . The lucky missing cash owner was given back $30,000 from some lost AT&T stock shares he had forgotten all about. According to Tim Allen, spokesman for the State Treasury office, the stocks were sold by the State and the cash was placed in the state's Unclaimed Money Fund until the citizen found and claimed them.

Unclaimed properties are intangible financial assets (except for safe deposit box contents) that have been deemed 'abandoned' by the owners. State law requires these funds to be turned over to the state after a period of inactivity. According to the Oklahoma Department of Treasury website, "Evidence of this inactivity includes failure to cash a check, the return of a check or correspondence by the Post Office as undeliverable, or the absence of any communication from the owner."

According to the General Provisions of Oklahoma's Unclaimed Money Rules, qualifying 'intangible property' comes from the following sources: (A) monies, checks, drafts, deposits, interests, dividends and income; (B) credit balances, customer overpayments, gift certificates, security deposits, refunds, credit memos, unpaid wages, unused airline tickets, and unidentified remittances; (C) stocks and other intangible ownership interests in business associations; (D) monies deposited to redeem stocks, bonds, coupons and other securities, or to make distributions; (E) amounts payable and due under the terms of insurance policies; (F) amounts payable and due under the terms of mining or mineral leases; and (G) distributable amounts from trusts or custodial funds created with a plan to provide profit sharing, stock purchase, supplemental unemployment insurance, employee savings, welfare, health, pension, severance, vacation, death, retirement, among other benefits.

People lose track of these assets after they move and do not remember to leave behind a forwarding address resulting in uncashed and lost checks and the like. Death is also a common cause of financial assets being abandoned especially if there's no will and the next of kin cannot be located. Most of the time, unclaimed property owners simply forget about their finances in the rush of day to day living.
(Part 1 of 2)

The city of Antlers, Oklahoma is known as "The Deer Capital Of The World". By the city's name alone, we can guess a number of bucks are running around in the wilderness of Oklahoma. But hundreds of millions of lost bucks are also in the State's Treasury Department and, you guessed right – they are not brown and furry and their not running around. I'm obviously talking about the $260 million in Oklahoma unclaimed money stored away in the State Treasurer's Office. These assets belong to approximately 350 thousand Okie's who have somehow lost track of them at some point. The primary reason the state's fund got so big is because most of the owners do not even know they have cash being held by the state!

I didn't know I had it. says Leiland Osmond, after getting back $150 of his missing money in an Oklahoma unclaimed property outreach program at the State Fair. Oklahoma State Treasurer Scott Meacham says he is not alone. "Obviously, a lot of people have lost money and don't realize it." the Treasurer noted in a recent report by Oklahoma's KSBI-TV. Visiting the fair paid off for Osmond who plans to share his newly discovered cash. "My grandchildren will take care of it."

People lost a handle on these assets when they relocate and do not remember to leave behind a forwarding address resulting in uncashed and lost checks and the like. Death is also one of the common causes of financial assets being abandoned especially if there's not a will and the next of kin cannot be located. The majority of the time, unclaimed property owners simply forget about their finances in the rush of day to day living.

Residents of Oklahoma and other states ought to check and do an internet unclaimed property search. They may just find out the government owes them money this time and not the other way around.
