The city of Antlers, Oklahoma bills itself "The Deer Capital Of The World". By the city's name alone, we can surmize that a lot of bucks are running around in the wilderness of Oklahoma. But hundreds of millions of lost bucks are also in the State's Treasury Dept. and, you guessed right - they are not furry and brown and their not roaming around. I'm obviously talking about the 260 million dollars in Oklahoma unclaimed money stored away in the State Treasury Office. These funds belong to roughly 350 thousand residents who have somehow lost track of them over the years. The primary reason the state's fund got so big is because the majority of the owners don't even know they have cash being held by the state!

I didn't know I had it. says Leiland Osmond, after getting back $150 of his forgotten funds in an Oklahoma unclaimed money outreach program at the State Fair. Oklahoma State Treasurer Scott Meacham says he is not alone. "Obviously, a lot of people have lost money and don't realize it." says the Treasurer in a recent report by Oklahoma's KSBI-TV. Going to the fair was well worth it for Osmond who plans to share his newly discovered cash. "My grandchildren will take care of it."

According to the General Provisions of OK's Unclaimed Money Rules, qualifying 'intangible property' comes in the following forms: (A) checks, monies, deposits, drafts, dividends, income and interests; (B) customer overpayments, credit balances, security deposits, gift certificates, credit memos, refunds, unused airline tickets, unidentified remittances, and unpaid wages; (C) intangible ownership interests in businesses like stocks; (D) money deposited to redeem bonds, stocks, other securities, coupons, for distribution; (E) amounts due and payable under the terms of insurance policies; (F) amounts due and payable under the terms of mining or mineral leases; and (G) distributable amounts from trusts or custodial funds created with a plan to provide welfare, health, pension, severance, vacation, death, retirement, profit sharing, stock purchase, supplemental unemployment insurance, employee savings, and other benefits.

People lose track of these assets after they move and forget to leave behind a forwarding address which results in uncashed and lost checks and the like. Death is also a common cause of financial assets being lost especially if there is no will and the next of kin can not be located. Most of the time, unclaimed property owners just plain forget about their finances in the rush of day to day living.

Residents of OK and other states ought to check and do an online unclaimed property search. They might just discover that the government owes them cash this time and not the other way around.

The lucky lost asset owner was reunited with $30,000 from some lost AT&T stocks he had forgotten all about. According to Tim Allen, a spokesperson for the State Treasurer's office, the stocks were sold by the State and the money was placed in the state's Unclaimed Money Fund until the citizen found and claimed them.

Unclaimed properties are intangible financial assets (aside from safe deposit box contents) that have been classified 'abandoned' by their owners. State law requires these assets to be handed over to the state after a specified period of dormancy. According to the OK Department of Treasury site, "Evidence of this inactivity includes failure to cash a check, the return of a check or correspondence by the Post Office as undeliverable, or the absence of any communication from the owner."
